Welcome to Dr. Danny Morick’s Marine Pathology Laboratory. Our laboratory focuses on advancing marine science through cutting-edge research in marine animal health and sustainable aquaculture. Located on the Mediterranean coast at the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station, Sdot Yam, Israel. We combine field studies, laboratory research, and innovative technologies to understand and protect marine ecosystems.
Our screening program investigates the emergence and transmission of pathogens among aquatic animals in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Utilizing advanced technologies, this research aims to provide new insights into marine biology, ecology, and public health. Ultimately, we seek to establish a clear understanding of marine animal health and the molecular mechanisms of fish viruses, improving knowledge on virus spread in aquaculture.
We collect marine fish and shellfish regularly from multiple sites along the Israeli Mediterranean coast and offshore finfish farms. Specimens come from fishing boats, targeted surveys, collaborators, and other sources. Whenever possible, sample locations are precisely recorded; otherwise, general geographic data is noted. Each specimen undergoes necropsy, including pathological, parasitological, and tissue analyses. Molecular screening is applied to detect selected pathogens.
Long-term data collection allows assessment of health status in key marine species and helps identify virus and bacteria transmission between wild and farmed fish. The data available here is raw and subject to further laboratory analysis for specific studies. As screening methods and molecular tools are still being optimized, some data may be partial or incomplete.
